Daybreak (741.5 R163)
Brian Ralph
A good read for fans of the zombie genre, Daybreak is a first-person graphic novel seen through the eyes of a silent observer tackling the day-to-day task of surviving in a post-apocalyptic land filled with zombies and other threats.
You’ll meet a cast of characters ranging from a young man looking for friendship, a lucky dog providing some needed comedic relief, and an elderly man pushed to the edges. The squeamish are saved from the ravenous appetites that zombies exhibit in horror films; instead the threat of zombies and the interaction with other survivors provides the majority of the tension.
The pencil-sketched frames do well in parallelling the barren landscape depicted throughout the novel and can leave you wandering what’s lurking in the dark corners of the panel. The novel brings a fun twist with having the reader play a role in the novel, and I feel that is what separates it from more established zombie series such as The Walking Dead.
