Maugham’s novel is a satire of the English literary society in the 1920s. Alroy Kear is hired by the widow of a recently deceased and much-acclaimed novelist to write his biography. Complications ensue when Kear discovers that the famous novelist’s first wife was a voluptuous one-time barmaid who willingly shared her favors with anyone who took her fancy.
