This has been called the first great proletariat novel in its harsh and realistic portrayal of a nineteenth century coalminers’ strike. We follow the life of Etienne, introduced in Zola’s earlier novel L’Assommoir, who gets a new start in his life as a manual laborer, only to lead a revolt.
