This absorbing and relevant narrative brings to life a pivotal moment in U.S. history, when America's drive for an overseas empire clashed with the brutal realities of a foreign occupation. On the eve of a new century, an up-and-coming Theodore Roosevelt championed a movement to transform the United States into a global force, with far-flung colonies to rival the European powers. Under pressure from Roosevelt and his allies, a reluctant President William McKinley led America into a war with Spain. The clash vaulted America to world power and thrust the nation into its own imperial drama in the Philippines.

Gregg Jones’ reporting has appeared in the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Arkansas Gazette, Guardian, and The Observer (UK), as well as other papers in the U.S. and Australia. He lives in Dallas, Texas.
