Strategies for Finding Information on Private Companies

Finding information about public companies can be a cakewalk. For private companies, this same task can be a tough challenge. This tutorial demonstrates to attendees various free and private Web-based resources that access relevant information on these elusive organizations. First, we learn how to access private company information from Reference USA and Hoover’s, whether you are researching just one company or developing a customized list of companies that meet specific criteria that you choose. We explore Thomas Net for information on U.S.-based manufacturers, and the Foundation Center website for background information on charities and foundations. Other sources that we discuss include The Forbes’ ranking of America’s Largest Private Companies, the Inc 5000 List of America’s Fastest Growing Companies, and the San Francisco Business Times Book of Lists with rankings of the most influential Bay Area private companies, arranged by business activity or industry.
