Getting the Most from Google

Search experts report that Google is the most popular search engine for finding information on the World Wide Web.  A typical keyword query returns an enormous number of “hits” or “results".  But are you finding the results you need?
This workshop will help you save time, and improve your web searching skills, by refining your search strategies using site-specific operators in the “Advanced Search” mode.

Thursday, September 14 OR Thursday, October 19
New Google Features

New search features and tools will be introduced and demonstrated such as: PhoneBook, Movies, Street Maps, Travel Information, Weather, Web Page Translation, and more. We will also learn what Google can't do, and when it's best to consult other search engines, directories, databases, or print resources.

Wednesday, September 20 OR Friday, October 20

Investment Information on the Web
This workshop introduces participants to financial portals such as Yahoo! Finance, MSN Money, and MarketWatch. The websites to be examined cover company profiles, financial reports, securities valuation, screeners, trading statistics, and insider trading. We also look at sample web-based investment letters such as Morningstar.com.

Tuesday, September 26 OR Wednesday, October 25 (postponed to Jan/Feb 2007)
The Invisible Web

A large percentage of the World Wide Web is not searchable with a general purpose search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or Teoma.com.

The “Hidden” or “Invisible” web contains very high quality content that can only be searched by selecting the best searchable databases. Learn how subject directories and specialized databases can save you time and improve the quality of your online search experience.

Wednesday, October 4
