Mechanics' - Marshall Match Ends in Narrow Victory For Marshall That Went Down To Final Game. Power of Chess Clubs in Bringing Communities Together in Full Force in Historic Match.

The nations two oldest chess clubs staged a fight to the finish in a live online match that can down to the final game. In the end, the 10-player team from Marshall Chess Club in New York narrowly edged out the home team of the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club 10.5-9.5 in a match that had, in my view, far greater significance and impact than just a friendly rivalry. Viewership on our channel for this event was the highest we have ever had by far, and goes to show the love and affinity people have towards their chess club and interest in brick and mortar chess clubs in general. We hope to organize and partner with other chess clubs around the country in an effort to learn about other chess communities and promote the power of chess clubs to unite communities together in using chess as a tool for community pride and engagement. We want to thank the many people that helped make this match happen, including Beatriz Marinello, Noah Chasin and the rest of the Board of the Marshall Chess Club, Bryan Quick, Executive Director of Marshall and his staff, the Mechanics' Institute Chess Committee and the staff at our Institute, Juan Cendejas, and Dr. Judit Sztaray, the club's General Manager, who was influential in helping organize the event. Special thanks to our partners for this event, Twitch and Chess.com, and special thanks to Isaac Steincamp from Chess.com for providing the live technical support during the match on their platform.

The match was a 10-player match, with 2 players representing u/2500, u/2300, u/2100, u/1900, and u/1700 categories. The time control was G/25 +5 and double round against the same opponent. Respectively, the inaugural Mechanics' team for this match were FM Kyron Griffith, FM Josiah Stearman, IM Elliott Winslow, WFM Natalya Tsodikova, Manas Paldhe, David Askin, Cailen Melville, Felix German, Erika Malykin, and David Rakonitz. The following were the matchups for the event:

Mechanics' - Marshall

U/2500

FM Kyron Griffith (KyronGriffith) (2452) - IM Yury Lapshun (imlapshun) (2491)

FM Josiah Stearman (josiwales) (2421) - GM Michael Rohde (boo786) (2475)

U/2300

IM Elliott Winslow (ecwinslow) (2248) - FM Liam Henry Putnam (FMLiamPutnam) (2244)

WFM Natalya Tsodikova (natrost2000) (2196) - FM Jon Jacobs (FishThatRoared)(2200)

U/2100

David Askin (David_Askin) (2053) - Charles Hua (GanarDespacito) (2063)

Manas Paldhe (manaspaldhe12) (2029) - Glenn Cabasso (CabassoG) (2013)

U/1900

Cailen Melville (Mangonel) (1871) - John A Gruska (krusta80) (1835)

Felix German (FelixGerman) (1859) - Orion Lehoczky Escobar (TetsuoKaga) (1725)

U/1700

Erika Malykin (starserika) (1688) - Chloe Gaw (poisedsummer) (1530)

David Rakonitz (MechAnjin) (1639) - Stefan Sekulic Derdowski (stefansd) (1357)

Erika Malykin lit the fireworks for the match right out of the gate, as she scored the first point of the match within the first few minutes. She caught her opponent in a well-known trap out of the Budapest (sure to make Judit proud) and produced this beautiful mate: Gaw - Malykin

In the other games, IM Yuri Lapshun did not arrive at the start of his match with FM Kyron Griffith due to NY traffic, so it was a forfeit. All other games started on time, and after the 1st round of games, Mechanics led comfortably 7-3, but included Marshall's top overall board GM Michael Rohde won a technical game against his former student FM Josiah Stearman. The second round of games was a different story. Marshall players seemed to settle in to mount a comeback. As the evening went on Marshall held an 9-8 lead with two games remaining. Cailen Melville seemed in control of his match and was up +5 on his opponent when suddenly there was internet disconnection. Here was the position at time of disconnect, with white to move: Melville - Gruska

This was of course quite ironic given we are in the Bay Area, but he could not reconnect in time and he lost on time. With Marshall leading 10-9, it was all down to Natalya, who was in a complicated game and both players were short on time. The position got to a point where Natalya had 2 queens on the board, but the position was such that her opponent had a perpetual and the game ended in a draw, sealing the win for Marshall, 10.5 - 9.5.

The tournament was a huge success and we saw in the broadcast people rooting and cheering for their clubs. We believe organizing matches such as these really help promote a positive culture within the club and offers the opportunity for others to learn about the players and happenings of other clubs in other communities. We hope to organize more matches like this in the future, perhaps organizing something larger. The real winners Tuesday night were the chess fans, who got to see a battle of the two oldest chess clubs in the U.S., by the players that participate at the club on a regular basis. The involvement of the regular club player, and that it featured players of varying skill levels really made it feel like a club match, and in many ways, made it just as exciting or more than watching super GM's play.
