CinemaLit: Fury
Directed by Fritz Lang

Friday, September 6, 2019 - 6:00pm

This biting indictment of vigilante justice was made at a time when lynchings were endemic in the United States, and based on an actual double murder that took place in San Jose in 1933. Spencer Tracy is Joe Wilson, an ordinary guy who’s at last scraped together enough money to reunite with her fiancé. While on his way to her, he’s picked up in a small town and held on flimsy evidence for the kidnapping of a child. Rumors fly, and soon an angry mob gathers outside the jail. Fury was Lang’s first film after fleeing Nazi Germany.
