Independent Publishers Working Group

Tuesday, May 21, 2019 - 4:00pm

The quarterly Indie Publishers' Working Group was started by author and editor C J Verburg in January 2011 in response to the rapidly changing landscape of publishing and the diverse needs of Mechanics' Institute member writers. If you're working on a book project and you're curious about independent publishing, or publishing in general, you're welcome to attend. This group picks up where writers' groups leave off: How do I prepare my book for publication? Once it's published, how can I boost its success? We pool a wide range of experience to answer a wide range of questions, from production (When do I need an editor, and what kind? How should I format my book? Where can I find a good cover designer?) to marketing (What's SEO? How important is Amazon? What are the pros and cons of traditional publishing?). Sometimes we have guest speakers, including literary agents, editors, designers, publicists, copyright lawyers, and representatives from local book organizations such as Smashwords and Book Promotion Forum. We're also looking at field trips, e.g. to Goodreads, Facebook, and other Bay Area social media companies. Our bulletin board between meetings is a members-only Facebook page for tips, links, news, and questions.
