Love and Death (1975)
July 2017: Summer of Love and Death

Nebbishes of the world unite!

Directed by Woody Allen
Diane Keaton, Woody Allen

Boris Grushenko is a pacifist unlucky enough to be living in 19th century Russia. He is in love with his intellectual cousin, Sonja, who is not interested, perhaps because Boris wears horn-rimmed glasses in the age of Napoleon. This literate film makes a delightful hash of Tolstoy, Chekov, Dostoevesky, Eisenstein and (for some reason) Ingmar Bergmann. Best of all, Diane Keaton, as the faithless Sonja, proves she can be every bit as funny as Allen.
