Leadership Giving

Photograph of wood trim in the libraryThe Mechanics' Institute is grateful for all of its donors, who help us sustain our programs and services. The Leadership Circle is a group of dedicated supporters who provide significant investment in the success of the Institute for future generations.

In honor of our long history, and the impact that your gifts will have on our future, Leadership Circle levels are named after the awards given at the Mechanics' Institute's Industrial Fairs to outstanding exhibitors. Between 1857 and 1899, 31 fairs were held to promote the local industry. The fairs were also an important source of income to the Mechanics', helping to support our work and enabling us to remain a vital component of the Bay Area to this day.

All donors who give $1,000 or more per year are automatically enrolled in the Leadership Circle. In recognition of their investment in the Mechanics' Institute, Leadership Circle members receive the following exclusive benefits:

Bronze Level $1,000-$2,499

  • Reserved seating for events*
  • One complimentary one-year membership to give as a gift
  • Invitations to exclusive receptions with guest speakers plus one complimentary signed copy of their book (if applicable)​

Silver Level $2,500-$4,999

  • Reserved seating for events*
  • One complimentary one-year membership to give as a gift
  • Invitations to exclusive receptions with guest speakers plus one complimentary signed copy of their book (if applicable)
  • Private 90-minute session with a Mechanics' Institute librarian on topics such as "learn to read the stock market", "research your family tree", "how to start a blog", and more**​

Grand Bronze Medal Level $5,000-$9,999

  • Reserved seating for events*
  • Two complimentary one-year memberships to give as a gift
  • Invitations to exclusive receptions with guest speakers plus two complimentary signed copies of their book (if applicable)
  • Private 90-minute session with a Mechanics' Institute librarian on topics such as "learn to read the stock market", "research your family tree", "how to start a blog", and more**​

Grand Silver Level $10,000-$24,999

  • Reserved seating for events*
  • Two complimentary one-year memberships to give as a gift
  • Invitations to exclusive receptions with guest speakers plus two complimentary signed copies of their book (if applicable)
  • Private breakfast or lunch with Executive Director Ralph Lewin, Library Director Deb Hunt, Grandmaster-in-Residence Nick DeFirmian, or U.S. Chess Champion and grandmaster Patrick Wolff **
  • Your choice of (select one):
    • Venue space for a private event (1 per year).** Venue options include the fourth floor meeting room and board room.
    • Private viewing of key items from Mechanics' Institute archival collection​

Gold Medal Level $25,000+

  • Reserved seating for events*
  • Three complimentary one-year memberships to give as gifts
  • Invitations to exclusive receptions with guest speakers plus two complimentary signed copies of their book (if applicable)
  • Private breakfast or lunch with Executive Director Ralph Lewin, Library Director Deb Hunt, Grandmaster-in-Residence Nick DeFirmian, or U.S. Chess Champion and grandmaster Patrick Wolff **
  • Your choice of (select one):
    • Venue space for a private event (2 per year), on mutually agreed upon dates. Venue options include the fourth floor meeting room and board room
    • Three one-hour lessons from Grandmaster-in-Residence Nick DeFirmian or FIDE Master Paul Whitehead**,
    • Host a simultaneous exhibition with your friends against Grandmaster-in-Residence Nick DeFirmian, or
    • Play a tournament conditions game with the time control of your choosing against Nick DeFirmian, with post-game analysis**
