Author and Mechanics' Institute member Fred Schodt will be presenting his book and discussing his research odyssey in archives and libraries on four continents.

On New Year’s Eve, 1866, Risley’s Imperial Japanese Troupe arrived in San Francisco. Their acrobatics soon became the toast of the town and helped trigger the West’s craze for Japanese popular culture. Meet member author Fred Schodt who will discuss his research odyssey in archives and libraries on four continents and present the lost history of this Japanese sensation outlined in his book Professor Risley and the Imperial Japanese Troupe: How an American Acrobat Introduced Circus to Japan and Japan to the West.

Frederik L. Schodt is an award-winning author of numerous books about popular and esoteric Japanese culture. He is the author of The Astro Boy Essays, Dreamland Japan, Native American in the Land of the Shogun, and the editor-translator of The Four Immigrants Manga. He often served as Osamu Tezuka’s English interpreter. In 2009 he received The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for his contribution to the introduction and promotion of Japanese contemporary popular culture. He lives in the East Bay, California.
