Become a Member

Join the Mechanics' Institute for access to a convenient downtown library and its remote services, over 100 free cultural and literary events, and chess classes and tournaments.

Thank you for considering membership in the Mechanics' Institute!

Membership is open to all. Each category of membership offers the full services of the Library and Chess Room, special events, lectures, programs, and classes. Members receive the Institute's annual newsletter and may subscribe This Month at the Mechanics' Institute, our monthly publication.

Prospective and new members are welcome to attend our weekly tour of the Library and Chess Room each Wednesday at noon.

Benefits of Membership

All members receive:

  • Full use of the Library and its services.
  • Free or reduced admission to cultural events, programs, classes, and book groups.
  • Access to the Chess Room and its tournaments and classes.
  • WiFi access throughout the Library, Chess Room, and 4th floor meeting room.


Standard Memberships


$35 per year

For students through high school and full-time students enrolled at an accredited educational institution, taking at least 12 undergraduate and 9 graduate units. College students must provide proof of enrollment such as a current class schedule.


$95 per year

For one adult.


$150 per year

For family (up to two adults and their children under the age of 22) living at the same address.

For Individual or Family/Household. The amount beyond the standard membership fee listed above is tax-deductible.

Short-term Memberships

Short-term memberships offer a comfortable place to read from our huge Library collection; work on laptops (wireless access available) or Library computers; attend a book discussion, evening event, or Friday film; and play Chess in our historic Chess Club.

What short-term memberships are available?
One day ($12) or one week ($45)

How do I get a short-term membership?
Short-term memberships are available from the membership office (Suite 504) or the Library's 2nd floor circulation desk.
