Returns During the Pandemic

The 2020 pandemic has challenged libraries everywhere to rethink and reinvent their services and collections. We miss our members dearly and dream of the day when we can open our doors again. By far the most popular question has been, "How can I return my library books while the library is closed?"

For returns, the lobby book drop at 57 Post Street is open Monday-Friday between 8 am and 6 pm. On weekdays, there is a security guard to greet you and direct you to the book drop. No need to schedule an appointment, just come on by wearing a mask over your nose and mouth--we'll be wearing ours too!

If travel is not an option for you, you may mail your items through the United States Postal Service to the library at the following address:

Mechanics' Institute Library

57 Post Street, Suite 504

San Francisco, CA 94104

Fines will be waived for any member who has difficulty returning materials due to the pandemic situation. We are here for you! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need special accommodations. Call 415-393-0101 or email [email protected] or [email protected] for further assistance using Mechanics' Institute Library.
If you would like to refresh your to-be-read pile, we can help! The library is partially open for business, operating a "To Go" contactless service by appointment to assist members with returns and checking out new materials. During your appointment, you may conveniently return materials checked out before the COVID-19 shelter-in-place order.
