At Mechanics’ Institute, we believe chess is more than just a game — it’s a powerful tool for education, connection, and personal growth. Through our Chess in the Community initiative, we bring the benefits of chess beyond our walls and into parks across San Francisco. Come join us and meet new friends, play some casual chess, and improve your game with help from our chess coaches.

Join us weekly (weather permitting) 

 

  • Thursdays at Mechanics' Plaza (starting April 9th and skipping last Thursdays) from 12:00pm - 1:00pm
  • Fridays at Union Square from 11:30am -1:30pm
  • Fridays at UN Plaza from 2:00pm - 5:00pm
  • Saturdays at Yerba Buena Gardens from 11:00am - 2:00pm (summer only) Map here!
