This glorious kaleidoscope of a movie follows several characters through 1960s America, among them, a struggling English artist, an aspiring musician, a singer, and an increasingly radicalized activist. Yes, there’s definitely a plot, but it’s really about Beatles songs perfectly transformed into set pieces. Highlights include Bono as a Ken Kesey-like guru (“I Am the Walrus”), Joe Cocker in three roles as a NYC bum/pimp/drug dealer (“Come Together”) and Eddie Izzard as a puppeteer/circus ringmaster (“For the Benefit of Mr. Kite.”) The Age of Aquarius is neither sugar-coated nor reviled here – but it is quite often successfully captured.
