Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951)
May 2018 -- Treasures from the MI Film Collection

Directed by Raoul Walsh | Gregory Peck, Virginia Mayo

This swashbuckling adventure film set during the Napoleonic wars is an adaptation of C.S. Forester’s excellent Hornblower novels. Rousing sea battles, strategy and romance keep this high seas adventure moving, and while Gregory Peck wisely did not attempt a British accent, he is completely believable as the self-doubting Captain Horatio Hornblower, down to his shy, throat-clearing “harrumph.” Virginia Mayo plays the formidable Lady Barbara Wellesly as far more than the usual lady in distress.
