Catamaran Fall Launch Party

Catamaran Literary Reader, founded in 2012, is located in the Tannery Art Center in Santa Cruz. This beautiful, high quality, full-color quarterly magazine features fine art, poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. The contributing artists and writers come from California and beyond. It has a loyal following of readers who celebrate culture, arts, books and museums. Mechanics' Institute is delighted to collaborate with Catamaran to celebrate their Fall 2023 edition. Featured writers include Stephen D. Gutierrez, Sean Stiny, Yaccaria Salvatierra, Dion O'Reilly, Jeff Ewing, Dan Haifley, and John Briscoe, who will read from their works.

Join us for a reception at 6:00 pm, with readings beginning at 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm, followed by a tour of Mechanics' Institute for interested guests. Complimentary beverages and light snacks will be shared.

Magazines will be sold onsite.

Stephen D. Gutierrez is the author of three collections of short stories and essays and the winner of an American Book Award. He has published extensively in journals and anthologies, including Catamaran Literary Reader and Chicago Quarterly Review and, most recently, Hunger Mountain Review, The North American Review, and Cimarron Review. Two of his essays have received Notable listings in BAE. Originally from a small working-class city in Southeast Los Angeles County, City of Commerce, he taught for many years at Cal State East Bay and continues to live in the East Bay since retiring.

 

 

 

A Northern California native, Sean Stiny studied English Literature at the University of California, Davis. He’s a writer and woodworker and an owl box maker. He works in marketing and heads outdoors as often as possible. He lives with his wife, a third grade teacher, in Petaluma. His work has appeared in The Los Angeles Review, Grit Magazine, Sacramento Magazine, and previously in Catamaran Literary Reader in 2016.

 

 

 

 

Yaccaira Salvatierra’s poems have appeared or are forthcoming in POETRY Magazine, The Nation, Huizache, and Rattle among others. Her collection, Sons of Salt, is forthcoming with BOA Editions in 2024. She lives in Oakland, California where she is a dedicated educator in historically marginalized but resilient communities.

 

 

 

 

Dion O’Reilly’s debut collection, Ghost Dogs, was runner-up for The Catamaran Prize and shortlisted for several awards, including The Eric Hoffer Award. Her second book, Sadness of the Apex Predator, will be published by University of Wisconsin's Cornerstone Press in 2024. Her work appears in Missouri Review, New Ohio Review, The Sun, Rattle, Narrative, and The Slowdown. She facilitates private workshops, hosts a podcast at The Hive Poetry Collective, and is a reader for Catamaran Literary Quarterly. She splits her time between a ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains and a residence in Bellingham, Washington.

 

 

 

Jeff Ewing is the author of the poetry collection Wind Apples and the short story collection The Middle Ground. His poetry, fiction, and essays have appeared in Crazyhorse, Southwest Review, ZYZZYVA, Willow Springs, Subtropics, Utne Reader, and Cherry Tree. He lives in Sacramento, California.

 

 

 

 

Dan Haifley was Executive Director of O’Neill Sea Odyssey, a free, ocean-going science and environment program for mostly low-income elementary school students, from 1999 to 2019. He serves on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council, and is Board member and Secretary for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and is Chair of the Board of Directors of Catamaran Literary Reader. From April 2008 until March 2019, he published an ocean column in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. He is married to Rebecca Haifley and has two grown children, Aaron and Julia, and enjoys ocean kayaking, reading, and exploring our region’s wild areas.

 

 

John Briscoe is a San Francisco poet, author and lawyer. He has received the Oscar Lewis Award in Western History, first Prize in the Top Shelf Book awards, and other literary distinctions. His law practice for more than fifty years has included representing countries in disputes with other countries in international courts, and advising the United Nations in the aftermath of the Gulf War. He is a distinguished fellow at the University of California, Berkeley
