Safe in Hell (1931)
January 2017 - Pre-Code: Adult Entertainment

Directed by William A. Wellman
Dorothy Mackaill, Donald Cook

Gilda is a prostitute fleeing New Orleans for the supposed murder of her latest "john," Piet Van Saal. An old boyfriend arranges for safe passage to Tortuga, and after "marrying" Gilda, leaves on his ship. She then herself face-to-face with a very much alive Van Saal, on the run for an insurance scam gone wrong. This well-acted film features two prominent African-American performers -- Nina Mae McKinney and Clarence Muse -- portraying completely un-stereotypical characters.
