Early in the film, a disheveled man wanders into a restaurant, sits at the piano, and astonishes everyone with a flood of melody. This biopic of David Helfgott, a pianist who struggled with mental illness, shines with performances by Geoffrey Rush as the adult Helfgott and Armin Mueller-Stahl as his tyrannical father. Told largely in flashbacks, the film depicts Helfgott’s rise as a musical prodigy, his mental breakdown, and his resurgence after years in a mental institution.
