The Public Press investigates social, economic and environmental problems, and engages the community in seeking solutions.
Their mission is to enrich civic life in San Francisco by delivering public-interest journalism to broad and diverse audiences through print and interactive media not supported by advertising. Along with producing award-winning, in-depth investigative and explanatory reports on local policy issues, the Public Press promotes civic engagement by facilitating face-to-face community conversations on public policy.

Executive Director Michael Stoll oversees strategic planning, editorial and organizational partnerships. Stoll has been a reporter or editor at the San Francisco Examiner, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Hartford Courant, has written freelance for more than a dozen other national and local publications, and researched and taught journalism at Stanford, San Jose State University and the University of San Francisco.
Publisher Lila LaHood oversees business, marketing, finance and fundraising. LaHood has been a reporter at three newspapers and a professional fundraiser for local nonprofit organizations. She is the past president of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Northern California chapter, and runs the organization’s annual Excellence in Journalism awards.
