A Message For Our Community

Welcome to Mechanics’ Institute, a vibrant home for curiosity, conversation, and community in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Whether you’re a longtime member, a first-time visitor, or simply exploring what we’re all about, we’re so glad that you’re here. Since 1854, Mechanics’ Institute has offered a place where thinkers, readers, writers, makers, and doers can gather, and grow together.

At Mechanics’ Institute, we believe in the power of curiosity, dialogue, knowledge, and togetherness to build bridges, spark imagination, and encourage civic life. At the Institute, you can explore our beautiful Beaux Arts style historic library to read, write or work remotely; learn and play chess in the company of a Grand Master, attend a thought-provoking author event or discussion panel on the most pressing issues of our day; watch a classic film with a leading curator; join a book club; take a masters’ writing class to build your skills; and in the process socialize with the wonderful array of people who make up our community.

Our new website offers a plethora of opportunities to learn more about what happens at Mechanics’ Institute and we’re so glad that you’re exploring it today.  Engage with us!

There’s a wonderful place for you here.

Warmly,
