Falconer Award
Neil Falconer 1923-2014
History
The Falconer Award is an annual chess prize given by Mechanics’ Institute Chess Club to the highest-rated player under the age of 18 in Northern California.
The award was established in 1999 by Neil Falconer, a longtime Mechanics’ Institute Trustee and strong chess player who remained active well into his later years. It was created to recognize and encourage junior chess excellence in Northern California.
The award typically includes a cash prize equal to the winner’s USCF rating from the previous rating list, meaning a high-rated junior could receive a substantial check simply based on their competitive strength.
Eligibility
To qualify for the Falconer Award, a player generally must be:
- Under 18 years old by the rating cutoff (December 31, previous years)
- Residing in Northern California as defined by specific criteria.
The award has helped support and spotlight elite youth chess talent in the region for decades. Many winners have gone on to illustrious chess careers.
