What's on Your Mind? An Intimate Writing Forum with David Guterson
February 7, 2026 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Mechanics' Institute hosts a variety of professional lectures and seminars, including writing masterclasses with renowned authors, literary courses with university professors, historical talks and presentations, and much more!
Ongoing Courses:
Proust Seminar with Dr. Mark Calkins: For over two decades, Mechanics' Institute has offered The Proust Seminar, a six-semester reckoning with Marcel Proust’s monumental seven-volume novel, In Search of Lost Time. The seminar is led by Dr. Mark Calkins, Lecturer Emeritus at San Francisco State University, and meets year-round (except July and August) on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 5:30pm. February 2026 will mark the beginning of the new, three-year cycle (2026-28). Our first meeting is listed on the events calendar, on February 10th
Berkeley Rep Docent Talks: The Berkeley Rep Docent Program is part of the theatre’s commitment to provide education and enrichment opportunities about the plays it presents in each season. The Docent Program has grown steadily since its inception in 2005. It is part of Berkeley Rep’s goal to engage the theatre’s audience and the community in a dialogue of ideas. Participants do not have to have seen a performance of the play to participate in the discussion. Check out our events calendar to see when we're having one next!
