Movies at Mechanics' Presents The Philadephia Story (1940)
Friday, Sep 5 | 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In 1938, Katharine Hepburn was labeled “box office poison” and her career came to a standstill. She left Hollywood for the stage, vowing to return only on her own terms. After starring in The Philadelphia Story on Broadway, she secured the film rights to the play and sold them to MGM, ensuring her path back to the screen. The Philadelphia Story became her comeback triumph, a testament to her strength and will to survive in Hollywood.
The story follows Tracy Lord, a recently divorced Philadelphia heiress, navigating the plans for her upcoming marriage. Complications ensue when the press enters the home, and her ex-husband shows up! Witty, fun, and modern, featuring a stellar cast and one of the best scripts of the 1940s, The Philadelphia Story is a must-see gem with a fascinating backstory to match.
Katharine Hepburn had a great deal of power over the production, due to her terms when selling the rights to MGM. Over the studio’s vocal objections, the character of Tracy Lord appears for her first real scene wearing a pantsuit. Throughout the film, she wears three different examples of menswear. Fashionable pants for women were new and revolutionary in 1940, and The Philadelphia Story was among the first Hollywood films to showcase them. Also notable is the stunning evening gown that Tracy wears to the party before her wedding. Designed by longtime MGM costume designer Adrian, this dress is one of the best examples of his great talent.
