Movies at Mechanics' Presents: Clueless (1995)
Friday, Apr 3 | 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Carefree, superficial teenager Cher Horowitz is a dedicated matchmaker for her friends and teachers, in this 1995 cult classic based on Jane Austen’s Emma. As she tends to others’ wellbeing at her Beverly Hills high school, she misses the romance right in front of her. Will Cher come to recognize her own needs, or will she continue to prioritize others over herself?
Amy Heckerling, the director of such films as Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Look Who’s Talking, had long wanted to adapt a classic literary work using a modern high school as the setting. Upon re-reading Emma, with its wealthy and spoiled protagonist who considers herself a matchmaker, Heckerling wrote a modern retelling of the story set at an upscale Beverly Hills high school. After first being considered as a Fox television series, Paramount ultimately purchased Clueless to be produced as a feature film.
Amy Heckerling embarked on a comprehensive study of teenage slang, peppering the script with language authentic to Beverly Hills of the 1990s. When Heckerling saw Alicia Silverstone in an Arrowsmith music video, she was struck by Silverstone’s unique combination of maturity and naivete, and immediately cast her to play Cher. Stacey Dash followed as Cher’s best friend Dionne, and Brittany Murphy as the frumpy new girl whose transformation sets Cher on her newfound path as matchmaker.
The filming was happy, and the set supplied a low-key, casual atmosphere for its teenage actors. As a result, Clueless is a joyous film, as funny and sharp today as it was in 1995. The young stars of Clueless clearly enjoy the experience, and their comfort is evident in strong, confident performances.
In the years since Clueless’s release, its influence on American pop culture and language has been immeasurable. It combines classic storytelling with modern humor and sensibilities, and many film critics and literary experts have praised Clueless as one of the greatest Jane Austen adaptations ever made.
