In a tour-de-force performance, Ronald Colman plays an actor who struggles to distinguish between his onstage and offstage lives. During a theatrical run of Othello, we are witness to the blurred lines between fantasy and reality, and the dark underbelly of fame.

Ronald Colman was a veteran star of the silent era, and among only a handful to make a successful transition to sound. His ease with spoken dialogue, paired with his silky, baritone voice, allowed his career to continue into the 1940s and beyond. By the time he made A Double Life in 1947, Colman had twice been nominated for the Academy Award, and was considered one of the finest actors in the world. For this breathtaking performance as Tony John in A Double Life, he won top industry accolades–Best Actor at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

Paired with him is a newcomer in the industry, Shelley Winters. In her breakout role, Winters plays a waitress who falls under the spell of Tony John, and Hollywood took note. Her career took off in the ensuing decades, with supporting roles in such films as The Diary of Anne Frank (for which she won Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars) and The Night of The Iguana.

A Double Life is a surprising project for director George Cukor, who is primarily known as a “women’s director,” but A Double Life proves his versatility. It is a dark, brooding look at an often unforgiving business, where the pressure and fame can drive a person to madness.
