39 Steps
by John Buchan

Richard Hannay returns to England with a fortune he earned in South Africa. When Hannay is wrongly accused of murder, he finds himself on the run, chased by both the police and a ring of spies who are intent on stealing British military secrets. To prove his innocence and also protect Britain, Hannay must solve the riddle of the 39 Steps. Originally published in 1915, The Thirty-Nine Steps is considered one of the first spy thrillers and was later made famous with Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film adaptation.

Each month, a member of Brown Bag Mystery Readers nominates a mystery novel and leads a discussion. A librarian is on-hand to facilitate the book chat and to update the group with any news. All Mechanics' Institute members are welcome to join these meetings. Brown Bag Mystery Readers meets the 2nd Monday of every month (excluding holidays).
