The Mechanics’ Institute community has been invited to a free, private, socially-distanced, hour-long museum experience at the Society of California Pioneers. Curator John Hogan will treat us to an overview of the season’s exhibition highlights including Eadweard Muybridge’s eighteen-foot, thirteen-panel 1878 Panorama of San Francisco and the Lone Mountain Cemetery Ledgers (illuminating the harrowing experience of San Franciscans in the aftermath of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire).

Bring your lunch and after the museum visit check out the new Tunnel Tops park right nearby.

Since its founding in 1850, The Society of California Pioneers has maintained a collection of historically-significant manuscripts, documents, paintings, prints, photographs, and objects; each requires ongoing care and conservation to ensure that it will be available to future generations. The preservation of these artifacts is central to our mission. A free public exhibition, FOR GENERATIONS TO COME will feature recently-conserved and digitized works, highlighting our long history of service to both the academic community and the general public.

Several significant but rarely-exhibited works, including their original copy of Eadweard Muybridge’s eighteen-foot, thirteen-panel 1878 Panorama of San Francisco and the Lone Mountain Cemetery Ledgers (illuminating the harrowing experience of San Franciscans in the aftermath of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire), will be displayed alongside examples of restoration funded by our members and carried out by professional painting, photography, and silver conservators.

The Society of California Pioneers Museum and Library features rotating exhibitions, education programs, and open-access online content using the art, artifacts, and manuscripts amassed and maintained by our nonprofit organization. Our free public programs are designed to support scholarship and encourage new interpretations that expand our understanding of the diverse experiences of those who came before us.
