Join us in celebrating a major milestone in San Francisco’s historical and cultural landscape: the 10th anniversary of the Tenderloin Museum and the release of a newly updated edition of Randy Shaw’s book, The Tenderloin: Sex, Crime, and Resistance in the Heart of San Francisco.
When first published in 2015, Shaw’s book offered a landmark account of the Tenderloin, often dismissed or misunderstood, as a vital, resilient neighborhood with a long history of resistance to displacement, vice laws, and political neglect. Now, in 2025, the revised edition adds two new chapters and dozens of updates that reflect the dramatic impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the Tenderloin. COVID triggered an unprecedented level of drug activity, created new challenges to retail and cultural venues, and spawned rising resistance to City Hall using the Tenderloin as a drug containment zone.
Hear directly from author and Tenderloin Museum founder Randy Shaw, in conversation with Katie Conry, as they reflect on the Tenderloin’s evolving story, the museum’s bold expansion plans, and what it means to tell the history of a neighborhood from the inside out. Together, they’ll explore how place-based history can offer a powerful counter-narrative to mainstream portrayals and why preserving and amplifying marginalized voices is more urgent than ever.
This special event is presented in partnership with the Tenderloin Museum. Books will be available for sale on the day of this event.
