Mechanics' Institute is undertaking a Building Renovation years in the making, a project that will give our historic home the care it has long deserved, without ever losing the character our members love. The work will touch two Library floors, our fourth-floor meeting space, and the historic Chess Room. The project includes ADA upgrades, new study rooms, updated furniture and lighting, and improved ventilation and A/V, all while preserving the spiral staircase, stacks, ceiling molding, and wood paneling that make this building what it is. Construction runs from early October 2026 through an anticipated late February 2027, and Library services will continue uninterrupted throughout the entire renovation. What does the renovation include?

Borrowing & returning books: The full collection remains available to borrow. If an item is temporarily hard to reach due to construction, staff will happily retrieve it for you. Returns can be made via the book drop or at the front desk as usual.
Online & digital services: We're adding more eBooks and audiobooks for popular new releases, and expanding our research databases.
Coffee/tea service: Available in the 4th floor Meeting Room.
Programs & events: Continuing, with some programs relocated within the building or moved online.
