Yosemite on the Walls

Library

Wednesday, Nov 18 | 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

A short Archives chat with slideshow.

See surviving views of Yosemite that hung in the Institute’s galleries in 1864—the same year Congress and Lincoln set the Valley and Mariposa Grove aside for public use.

Myles Cooper will share a brief slideshow of those images, plus Watkins’s own photographs of the fair, and show how to dig into the exhibition reports in the Archives. An accurate reproduction of one of Watkins’s mammoth photographs of Cathedral Rocks will be on display.

Books on Yosemite, hiking, and nature photography available for checkout.
