by Jeanette Winterson

Book cover of The Passion

Henri works in Napoleon Bonaparte’s kitchen posted in Russia during a miserable winter where disease infiltrates soldiers of the camp. Villanelle is Venetian who dresses as a man at night to gamble in casinos of Venice. The two meet in a story that the Sunday Times called “As moving and funny as it is skilful, and reflects the author’s formidable appetite for life.” Author Jeanette Winterson won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1987 for The Passion.
