Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time (also known in English as Remembrance of Things Past) is a monumental, seven-volume novel that Edmund White called, "the most respected novel of the twentieth century." SFSU Lecturer in Comparative & World Literature Dr. Mark Calkins has led the Proust Seminar at Mechanics' Institute since 2001. In September the Seminar's 2023-26 cohort begins volume two, Within A Budding Grove. Dr. Calkins will be using the Modern Library Moncrieff/Kilmartin/Enright translation.
The Proust Seminar will be held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month from 5:30-6:30pm in the 4th Floor Board Room. The semester will begin on Thursday, September 14, 2023, and continue for five months until January 25, 2024. Please note the seminar dates below:
