SF Librarian Meetup featuring Sarah Houghton, the Librarian in Black

Members, librarians, and those interested in supporting the values that libraries and librarians stand for in our society are cordially invited to join the SF Librarian Meetup for a very special presentation from San Rafael Public Library Director Sarah Houghton. Sarah will be speaking on her new initiative, “Operation 451” aka We Are Not Neutral, co-created with Andy Woodworth.

Michelle Zaffino (former head of research/fact-checking at Marie Claire/Hearst Magazines) will also be presenting on how librarians can be guides in their community for fact-checking, critical thinking and guarding against fake news.

Operation 451 is a symbolic affirmation of the librarian values of knowledge, service of others, and free expression of ideas. It stands in direct opposition to the forces of intolerance and ignorance that seek to divide neighbors, communities, and the country. 451 was chosen because of its popular cultural significance, a nod to the great novel by Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451. Call it luck, fate, or serendipity, but the individual numbers 4-5-1 match up with the fourth and fifth articles of the Library Bill of Rights and the First Amendment to the Constitution. These are the values that Operation 451 promotes. http://operation451.info/
