The Shew Tree
by Liza Ward

Gretel's father is a bookish vice-principle, and her mother bedridden. When Karl, a farm boy, enters Gretel's gaze, he demonstrates the altruism her father lacks. Liza Ward's "The Shew Tree," first published in ZYZZYVA, was selected for the O. Henry Prize Award, recognizing it as one of the best short stories of 2019.
