Stoner is a Missouri farm boy who attends university to study agriculture on the advice from a county agent. His academic career takes an unexpected twist when he discovers literature. He follows his passion for teaching, marries Edith, and has a child. When his career fails to advance, and his wife withdraws, his life becomes unfilled. This campus novel follows an unlikely hero.
