A Talk and Tasting - Iconic San Francisco Dishes, Drinks and Desserts

"Talk and Tasting" -- Celebrate the new book Iconic San Francisco Dishes, Drinks and Desserts with author Laura Smith Borrman and experts on the Bay Area's classic culinary scene in a night of conversation and tasting of the city's iconic dishes and drinks. Panel guests include Ian Adams and Valter Fabiano of 15 Romolo; Taryn Edwards of the Mechanics' Institute; Julie Ho of Sam Wo Restaurant and Peter Quartaroli of Sam's Grill. Learn about -- and taste -- picon punch, San Francisco sourdough, the martini, chop suey, It's Its and more during this interactive event.

Books will be for sale at the event as well.

Speaker Bios

California native Laura Smith Borrman is a writer, editor, story gatherer, lover of food and drink and author of two previous books. She has worked in many industries, spanning pastry kitchens, culinary travel, public radio, research and the corporate world. She’s a mother of two and lives with her husband and children in Oakland. She writes about the city and the people who’ve shaped it at discoveringvintagesanfrancisco.com and about food memories, recipes and motherhood at cravingsofhome.com.

Taryn Edwards is Strategic Partnerships Manager for the Mechanics’ Institute. She manages the writers' activities for the Institute, works with other non-profits to achieve mutual goals, and spends a lot of private time digging up history of the place, people and food associated with it.

Peter Quartaroli has been a part of the Classic San Francisco restaurant world since he was 10 years old. Over the years he has worked at Original Joe’s and Bardelli’s. Peter started at Sam’s Grill about 25 years ago and became the managing partner of Sam’s when a group of investors and friends stepped in to help save the restaurant from extinction. Since 2014 Sam’s has seen an expansion to the Patio on Belden Alley and this fall is opening Sam’s Tavern adjacent to the restaurant on Bush Street. Peter also owns a film production company and has acting in over 30 films, produced 5 films and has a script based on a true story about Sam’s that is currently in development.
