San Francisco Chronicle

San Francisco Chronicle - The exclusive daily news media partner of the Mechanics' Institute!

The Mechanics' Institute has had a relationship with the San Francisco Chronicle, since shortly after its founding in 1865 by Charles and Michael de Young. The Chronicle is the largest newspaper in Northern California and the recipient of six Pulitzer Prizes for journalistic excellence.

San Francisco Writers’ Conference

The San Francisco Writers' Conference believes there is no better (nor more exciting) time to be a writer!

The San Francisco Writers' Conference is a premiere writing event held annually in February (President's Day Weekend) at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. SFWC is also the umbrella organization that oversees other educational writing and publishing events primarily in the San Francisco/Bay Area and online. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The Mechanics' Institute is thrilled to collaborate with the SFWC to provide educational, writing, and publishing events to its members and the public.

Words matter. Litquake sparks critical conversations, and inspires writers and readers to celebrate the written word. We serve the San Francisco Bay Area all year long with diverse literary programming, workshops, and a nine-day fall festival. Litquake is a project of the Litquake Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit registered in the state of California, and a tenant in the Mechanics’ Institute’s building.
