Welcome to the COVID-19 policy and reopening page for Mechanics’ Institute.
The Mechanics’ Institute (MI) welcomes back our loyal members! We look forward to seeing you in-person again soon. Based on the on current San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) regulations, MI is permitted to open our library for in-person services on a limited basis.
The MI Library will reopen for members beginning on Monday, April 5, 2021. Based on current DPH regulations, MI is required to be open at reduced hours and limited capacity. We will initially be open 2-4pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. All members must sign up ahead of time for a time slot so that we can monitor the number of members in the library.
As part of our reopening, we have several new building and library rules. All members must abide by these rules to ensure MI compliance with the local, state, and federal regulations and best practices.
- Face Coverings – All members, staff, and visitors to the building must wear face masks at all times. This is mandated by Order C-19-12d by the San Francisco Department of Public Health (https://www.sfdph.org/dph/alerts/files/Order-C19-12-Face-Coverings.pdf). Please use a face mask rather than a scarf or bandana, if possible, as studies have demonstrated that masks are more effective at preventing disease transmission.
- Health Checks – Anyone not feeling well should not come to the building. The MI Library will conduct temperature checks and refuse entry for anyone with a fever.
- Social Distancing – Members must maintain a safe social distance of at least six feet from one another. All library furniture and computer workstations take this into account, and no one is permitted to move or change the furniture layout.
- Food & Beverages – No food or beverages are allowed in the library.
Please note that MI has a zero tolerance for any infractions. First and foremost, we want to protect the health and wellbeing of all members and staff. Therefore, please note that any refusal to abide by these rules may result in immediate dismissal from the library and potential termination of membership benefits.
In addition, while the library is open for browsing, we strongly recommend that you continue to utilize the MI To Go service, even if you plan to visit, so that we can have your books and materials ready when you arrive. This will help MI maintain the social distancing requirements and additionally facilitate safer materials checkout. Additionally, please note that in order to meet DPH regulations, our library windows will be open to facilitate air circulation, so we encourage you to wear layers or warm clothing when you visit the MI library.
