Welcome to the COVID-19 policy and reopening page for Mechanics’ Institute
The Mechanics’ Institute (MI) welcomes back our members, chess players, and program attendees! MI can now allow in-person services and activities for members and guests at full capacity. We are working on reopening our library and events spaces with more extended hours gradually, following library and venue best practices.
Given recent changes to the San Francisco Bay Area Health Orders, masks are now required by all MI members, visitors, and building guests, regardless of vaccination status. Please note this change and bring a face covering if you are coming to the MI library, chess room, meeting rooms, or the building. No exceptions will be made. Information will be updated on this page as health mandates change in the future. Please check back for updates.
While the library is open for browsing, we encourage you to utilize the MI To Go Service, even if you plan to visit, so that we can have your books and materials ready when you arrive. In addition, the chess room will be open for limited hours for study only. Please note that no casual chess games are permitted to take place with those visiting the chess room – only structured tournaments will allow for actual chess games. Additionally, please note that windows in the library, event spaces, and chess room will be open to facilitate air circulation, so we encourage you to wear layers or warm clothing when you visit MI.
If you have any questions about our library services, please contact us at 415-393-0101 or email [email protected]. If you are interested in learning more about our live chess activities or would like to schedule a time to visit the chess room, please contact us at [email protected].
