Joy Ride: Show People and Their Shows
An afternoon with author John Lahr

Book cover of Joy Ride

Cafe opens at noon.

Over twenty-one years as The New Yorker’s senior drama critic, John Lahr published approximately one million words on theater and theatricals. Now, the Tony award-winning author, critic, and life-long theater-goer offers a collection of some of his most popular and engaging New Yorker pieces, which puts the great plays on Lahr’s watch in the context of the lives of the theatricals who created them.

From modern greats, like Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, David Mamet, Sarah Ruhl, Tony Kushner and August Wilson, through the work of directors like Nicholas Hytner and Ingmar Bergman, to Shakespeare himself, the depth of Lahr’s understanding is plain to see and extraordinary to read. Lahr brings the reader up close and personal with the artists and their processes, with the plays and the playwrights, with what they seek to express, and how they express it.

Don't miss: ACT’s production of Montress at the new Strand Theatre (September 16 - November 22); and our next Stage Lights Series: Program #2 featuring playwright Philip Kan Gotanda in October.

John Lahr is the son of a Ziegfield girl and comedian Bert Lahr, the lion in The Wizard of Oz. For over twenty-one years he served as the senior drama critic for The New Yorker magazine. His definitive biography, Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh, which was a finalist for the National Book Award, was published last year to universal critical acclaim. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award for biography; the Sheridan Morley Prize for Theatre Biography, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award for prose style.
