A Wedding in Haiti: the Story of a Friendship
by Julia Alvarez

Please note: The in-person meeting of this group had been canceled due to lack of interest. Please join the discussion online.

This book begins with a promise made by the author to a homesick young man who comes to the Dominican Republic to find work: that when he someday finds his great love, Alvarez will travel to Haiti to attend her friend's wedding. The author narrates a perfect storm of challenges involving insufficient roads and rivers that must be forded, illegal border crossings, and encounters which change her irrevocably, six months before the 2010 earthquake which would devastate the island country. This memoir tells the story of what happens when one woman makes an unlikely friendship that takes her on a transformative journey.

This discussion group also meets all month online, at milibrary.org/bookgroup.
