Directed by Jacques Feyder
Francoise Rosay, Jean Murat
It’s 1616, during the Spanish occupation of Flanders, and an alarming message has reached the little Flemish village of Boom. A Spanish duke with his army will be passing through and plans to spend the night. Certain they are facing looting, murder and rapine, the mayor and the town council decide their best course of action is for the mayor to play dead while the rest of the men hide. The women, on the other hand, have another plan entirely. Jacques Feyder’s delightfully feminist film mines comedy gold from religion, sexual politics, art, and even the costumes of the era.
