Marie Antoinette (1938)
July 2017: Summer of Love and Death

Keep your head while all about you are losing theirs on Bastille Day!

Directed by W.S. Van Dyke
Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power

Norma Shearer gives one of her best performances in this glittering film about the rise and fall of Marie Antoinette, from her beginnings as a teenaged bride to the dauphin, to her end as the victim of the French Revolution. Her acting in the title role, reportedly her favorite, earned her an Academy Award nomination. This movie, which is considered one of the most opulent of Hollywood’s golden age, also garnered Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role — Robert Morley as the hapless King Louis XVI.
